The Mystery of the Stubborn Seed 🌱

A Quran Lesson on the word Aṣarrū — Sūrah Nūḥ (71), Verse 7

1. A Special Word

Today We are going to dig into one powerful word from the Quran:

Aṣarrū (أَصَرُّوا)

This word comes from a story about Prophet Nūḥ (ʿalayhi as-salām) — Prophet Noah — and how hard he tried to help his people. Most people translate aṣarrū as “they were stubborn,” but if we dig a little deeper, it tells us a much richer story. Let’s find out what it really means.

Here is the verse it comes from:

وَإِنِّي كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوا أَصَابِعَهُمْ فِي آذَانِهِمْ وَاسْتَغْشَوْا ثِيَابَهُمْ وَأَصَرُّوا وَاسْتَكْبَرُوا اسْتِكْبَارًا

“And every time I called them so that You would forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their clothes, persisted (refused to look or listen), and grew proud — very, very proud.” — (Sūrah Nūḥ 71:7)

2. The Story: Prophet Nūḥ’s Big Challenge

Imagine Prophet Nūḥ (AS) talking to Allah, almost like a teacher telling the principal how his class is doing.

Nūḥ had spent a very, very long time inviting his people to believe in Allah — calling them in the morning and at night, quietly and out loud. He wasn’t being mean. He was trying to help them, so that Allah would forgive them and they would be safe and happy.

But instead of listening, the people did four things to show they didn’t want to hear him:

  1. 🙉 They put their fingers in their ears — “We can’t hear you!”
  2. 🧥 They covered their faces with their clothes — “We can’t see you either!”
  3. 🪢 They were aṣarrū — persisted (refused to look or listen to change).
  4. 😤 They were proud (arrogant) — “We’re too important to listen.”

3. What Does Aṣarrū Really Mean?

Here’s the cool secret. The word aṣarrū comes from the Arabic root ṣ–r–r (ص ر ر).

Long ago, this word was used for tying a bag or pouch shut with a tight knot — so tight that nothing could get in and nothing could get out! A tied-up money pouch was even called a ṣurra.

So when the Quran says the people aṣarrū, it’s like saying:

They tied their hearts shut with a knot. 🪢

The good message was knocking — “Let me in! I’ll help you!” — but they kept their hearts tied tight, so nothing good could get inside.

Now keep that picture in your mind… and let’s meet a seed.

4. The Metaphor: The Seed That Wouldn’t Grow

To grow, a seed needs three perfect things:

  1. 💧 The right amount of water — not too much (or it drowns), not too little (or it dries out).
  2. ☀️ The right amount of sunlight — enough to grow, not so much that it burns.
  3. 🪴 The right kind of soil — good, healthy ground to settle into.

Now imagine the best farmer in the world. He gives the seed everything perfectly. The water is just right. The sun is shining. The soil is the finest you can find.

But the seed… refuses to open. It stays hard and closed, stuck in the dirt, knotted up tight, and will not crack open to grow.

That seed is aṣarrū. 🌱❌

5. The Connection: Doing Everything Right

Prophet Nūḥ (AS) was like that perfect farmer. He used the prophetic way of teaching — which means he did everything exactly right. He was patient, kind, and clear. He checked every single box! ✅

But even with the perfect “farmer” giving them the perfect message, his people chose to be like the stubborn seed — hearts tied shut, refusing to open up and grow.

👉 The problem was never the farmer. The problem was the seed that wouldn’t open.

6. Life Lessons for You and Me 💛

  • Don’t be the stubborn seed. When a parent, teacher, or friend gives you good advice, don’t “put your fingers in your ears.” Keep your heart open!
  • Untie the knot of pride. Often we get stubborn because we think “I already know everything.” Notice that the people in the verse were also proud. Pride is the knot — and humbleness is what unties it.
  • Treasure the message. Every word in the Quran is a gift to help you grow into a better person. A seed that opens up gets to become a strong, beautiful tree. 🌳

A little dua to make: “O Allah, keep my heart soft and open. Don’t let me tie it shut. Help me listen, learn, and grow.” 🤲
