Allah describes Prophet Sulayman (AS) and Prophet Ayyub (AS) in remarkably identical terms — despite their lives being complete opposites.
Prophet Sulayman (AS) had everything. A vast kingdom, immeasurable wealth, armies of jinn, and even the wind itself made subservient to him. Yet all these blessings never distracted him from his Lord. Allah says:
“We gave Dawud, Sulayman — what an excellent servant! He was truly one who turned constantly to Allah.”
(Surah Sad, 38:30)
Prophet Ayyub (AS), on the other hand, lost nearly everything — his health, his wealth, his comfort — and endured years of suffering. Yet he never wavered. Allah says:
“We found him patient — what an excellent servant! He was truly one who turned constantly to Allah.”
(Surah Sad, 38:44)
Notice the phrases are almost word-for-word the same for both: “What an excellent servant. He was one who turned constantly to Allah.”
But what is different here is their situations:
Sulayman was GREATFUL for the blessings and Ayyub was PATIENT for the sufferings. Irrespective of their circumstances, they both fulfilled Allah’s command – one being grateful and another being patient.
Since, Allah’s command remains same, Allah used the same wordings for both the cases. Both are forms of turning back to Allah. Both are signs of an excellent servant.
Lesson : our job is to fulfill the command of allah irrespective of the situations and circumstances we are in.
